"Awakened"
MADELINE ARTENBERG & IRIS N. SCHWARTZ
(Rogue Scholars Press 2006)

Moongarden by Anthony McCann
(Wave Books 2006)

Like moonlight, McCann's attention gives weird clarity and an alien glow to post-industrial landscapes and human interiors. He uncivilizes us into seeing the world as both ruin and possibility: "It was danger/ gave them life/ but damage/ makes us shine."

(May 2006)
BAFFLED IN BALONEYVILLE is Robert Dunn’s latest collection of allegedly comic poetry and drawings. A great antidote for stress, better than Rogaine and Viagra combined! "His humor and craftsmanship are a perfect blend. His poems weren’t just written to make you laugh —though they accomplish that non—stop- but also to shake up your view of reality... My mind definitely worked better after reading a heavy dose of one of the most entertaining and yet serious poets, Robert Dunn." —Hal Sirowitz

This Poet Wears Prada

This Poet wears Prada or nada at all.
At the mic, this not quite five foot two Poet stands tall,
even without her Jimmy Choo shoes.
Anyone who says Talk is cheap and Actions speak louder than words
and thinks that this poetry stuff is just for faggots and nerds
has obviously not heard a peep of my words.

For the 3 to 5 minutes that I command your attention
and you're with me for every nuance and inflection,
I want to share your inner space
and take you on a journey through mine.
I want to see that light go on in your head and shine,
'cause that means we're relating and communicating just fine.

I want to get a reaction.
I want to see you to take some action,
even if it's just leaning forward
or laying back with eyes closed to listen.
If I can make your lips turn up in smile
or get the tears in your eyes to well up and glisten
then I know I'm doing it right.

Whether I'm rhyming, chiming or free-slamming verse,
I want you to take a peek at our universe.
I want you to feel, hear, smell and taste every sensation,
'cause poetry is about documentation
as well as this thing we call "communication".

It's not just about self-expression and being heard.
It's not just about our relationship with ideas and words.
It's more about you and I sharing our world
with the strangers who read the stuff
we put down on paper after we're gone
about this moment, this feeling, this idea captured yesterday
that we share with each other here today that lives on.

This Poet wears Prada or nada at all.
Forget this poor starving poet shit!
Our currency is our words and wit, so stand tall,
even without your Jimmy Choo shoes.

And you'll be glad you did." —Hal Sirowitz, Former Poet Laureate of Queens... "There are no fake notes here. This is a fresh and gritty first book announcing a gutsy presence in our midst. "Degrees of Freedom" is featured on The Academy of American Poets New Spring Books List for National Poetry Month. Here's what reviewers are saying... "Nicholas Johnson is a poet of incandescent wit, the kind of mordant intelligence whose first target is its own assumptions, and a strange haunted tenderness." – D. Nurkse ... "With metamorphic dexterity and uncanny ability to invigorate common expressions so that they become pure poetry, Nick Johnson writes his poems with skill and candor. The opening of each poem in “Degrees of Freedom” parts the sky with perceptual lightning, and by the time we finish, a devastating clap of truth’s thunder rolls in taking the poem - and us - by storm." – Molly Peacock ++++++++++++++++++
